Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday, while in Ithanga, Gatanga constituency, urged Gatanga MP Edward Muriu to focus on local development rather than national politics.

Gachagua had accompanied president William Ruto in the area to launch community water project.

Gachagua advised Muriu to refrain from extending his political influence into national politics and concentrate on Gatanga.

He suggested that this strategy would enhance his chances of securing re-election for a second term.

"You should cease extending your mandate into national politics and focus on Gatanga so that you can secure a second term," the DP said.

Adding that:

"Huyu kijana wetu Muriu, tunampenda but you should tell him to concentrate with his constituency on development but no other region."

Gachagua faulted Muriu for being among those leading the calls for him to be dropped by Ruto in 2027.

Muriu and Murang’a senator Joe Nyutu had requested president Ruto to consider Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro as a suitable candidate to deputize him.

To soften his blows on Muriu, the deputy president joked by saying that since his wife hails from Gatanga he would send her back to his in-laws in case he loses his job as the deputy president.

“If I lose my job as deputy president, I will return your daughter,” Gachagua said amid laughter from the crowd.

Gachagua seized the opportunity to rally support for the UDA party, urging locals to align themselves with the party's agenda.

Gatanga MP Muriu did not directly respond to Gachagua's criticisms but appealed for increased electricity supply and other development projects in the area.

He expressed gratitude to the head of state for initiating development projects in Gatanga and encouraged the electorate to support the government.

President Ruto has continued his tour of the Mt Kenya region since Wednesday, aiming to solidify his support in this crucial and populous area.

On Friday, both Gachagua and Ruto will be expected to tour Gatundu South to launch projects.
