Parents of a junior school in the Fedha area of Embakasi have been asked to pick up their children as a precautionary measure over a possible gas leak.

"Right now we are hearing gas is leaking after every minute. What the heck is going on?" a parent paused.

The parents further lament that no efforts have been made to move the gas cylinders adding that they do not feel safe.

"They can't remove the cylinders in the presence of people. Now every time we smell a gas leak," the parent went on.

Despite the suspected gas leak, the Nairobi County government on Monday allayed fears of another threat at the scene of the Embakasi gas explosion

The county chief officer in charge of disaster management Bramwel Simiyu said there was no cause for alarm as they have since taken the necessary precautionary measures.

Simiyu said they had evacuated the surrounding area and also invited the Energy Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) to come and assess the situation.

"We have asked them and the experts to come and identify and isolate the threat if any...we have also put our emergency services on standby," he said.

Police authorities and those from the county government rushed to the scene to ascertain the claims of a new gas leak.

Embakasi police commander Wesley Kimetto said they received reports from the public that there was a gas leakage from the site where the explosion happened.

“My initial assessment at the location does not ascertain that there is a gas leakage. We have asked experts to come and check,” he said.

The first gas leak occurred last week on Thursday night and caused an explosion which injured up to 280 people.

By Friday, Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said up to 6 people had died from the incident.
