Private motorists in Nairobi County have been exempted from paying parking fees every Saturday in a significant relief measure to ease financial burdens.

The waiver which is set to run until June 30, 2024, has been issued in line with the Nairobi City County Tax Waivers Administration Act.

The decision, according to Finance CEC Charles Kerich as per the Gazzete Notice has been made in concurrence with Governor Johnson Sakaja.

It aligns with the governor’s broader efforts to enhance the quality of life for Nairobians as well as build a supportive community.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 5 (2) (a) of the Nairobi City County Tax Waivers Administration Act, 2013, the County Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning in concurrence with the Governor, Nairobi City County, waives parking fees for all private motorist in Nairobi on Saturdays until June 30, 2024," the notice reads.

The waiver is seen as an aim to encourage weekend activities within the city, boosting local businesses and fostering a sense of financial ease for private vehicle owners.

This is almost two months after the county reviewed the parking fee for Zone I and Zone II upwards.

Zone I parking spots include the CBD, Kijabe Street, Westlands, Upper Hill, Community, Ngara, Highridge, Industrial area and Gigiri.

Other areas classified as Zone I are Kilimani, Yaya Centre, Milimani, Hurlingham, Lavington, Karen, Eastleigh, Muthaiga, Gikomba and Nairobi West.

Saloon cars owners here pay Sh300 up from Sh200 while vans and pickup owners pay Sh500 from Sh200.

Zone II spots are the on-street parking at commercial centers, and any county market parking is not included in Zone I.

Parking fees for lorries and minibuses weighing up to five tonnes now pay Sh2,000 up from Sh1,000.

Lorries weighing above five tons on the other hand pay Sh2,000 from the initial SH1,000.

For trailers, Sh500 was increased, and now pay Sh3,500.

The waiver comes in the wake of another relief extended to tenants and property owners in the county.

Sakaja announced a one-month extension to the penalty waiver on land rates.

The deadline for the waiver will lapse on January 31, 2024, after it was pushed from the original deadline of December 31, 2023.

"Enjoy the 100 per cent waiver and regularize the status of your property. Remember, enforcement on defaults will start in February," Sakaja added.
