Motorists now spend less than 20 minutes at a vehicle inspection centre due to new measures put in place by the National Transport and Safety Authority to ensure efficiency.

The steps involved in the internal processes have also been reduced to nine from the previous 25.

According to NTSA, the use of vehicle inspection check forms has been abolished with inspectors now using tablets in verification.

Motor vehicle inspection is a mandatory process undertaken by the agency on all vehicles to ensure they comply with necessary safety requirements.

“Operating a vehicle without a valid inspection certificate is an offence, and law enforcement personnel are advised to take necessary action,” NTSA says.

To promote transparency, the agency says, picture attachments of vehicles presented are uploaded into the system by the inspector as part of the validation process.

Upon inspection, the agency issues an E-sticker which applies to all commercial and public service vehicles.

“New parameters including conformance with the passenger vehicle body construction (KS372:2019) and maximum road speed limiters for motor vehicles (KS 2295:2018) have been incorporated in the process to ensure safety compliance,” it says.

Verification of the inspection validity is through the NTSA mobile app.

Motorists are required to book vehicle inspection and payment processes through the E-Citizen platform by paying an application fee of Sh1,050.

Once the inspection process has been completed, results are automatically updated on the NTSA mobile App for verification by law enforcers.

In a scenario where a vehicle fails the inspection, owners are given 13 days to correct the defects observed and present them for re-inspection at no additional costs.

“For convenience, the inspection report is easily accessible and downloadable from the motor vehicle owner's account,” NTSA says.

Booking for inspection requires a client to log in to the E-citizen platform, select NTSA portal (new), then motor vehicle and view.

The client will then click on motor vehicle services, select inspection type, submit to pay for inspection then click on complete, book now,  select the preferred centre and date and click complete.

The final process will require you to go to application history where you download and print the receipt and booking slip to carry it along with the payment slip for inspection.
