Kenyans have been seeking additional employment or income sources as a strategy to cope with the hard economic times, the latest survey by Infotrak shows.

The survey, which was released on Monday, said 45 per cent of respondents employed the strategy for survival.

It noted that the majority of those who used this strategy were males (47 per cent) and females (42 per cent).

It added that Kenyans have also been cutting back on non-essential expenses to cope with the difficult times.

The survey said 41 per cent of the respondents said they use this method to survive.

“Getting a side hustle and reducing non-essential expenditure are the main strategies adopted by Kenyans to cope with the economic hardships,” the report said.

The survey said other tactics Kenyans use to cope with the hard times include taking out loans (18 per cent), utilising community resources (16 per cent), borrowing money from friends or family (15 per cent), seeking financial counselling and assistance (8 per cent), credit cards (4 per cent), ration (3 per cent) and reduce the number of meal per day (1 per cent).

The interview was conducted between December 18 and 19, 2023 with a sample size of 1,500.

The survey was conducted through Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews and has a ±2.53 per cent margin of error and a response rate of 94 per cent.
