Jumwa condemns recent acts of violence against women

Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa has condemned the recent acts of violence against women witnessed in the country.

Jumwa in a statement on Thursday the recent incidents including the recent murders of two women in Airbnb accommodations are a reminder of the urgent need to address violence against women in society.

Jumwa termed it unacceptable for women to continue to be targeted, victimized and shamed on social media.

“We further denounce the shaming of victims as in doing so, they suffer double victimization. These senseless acts of violence not only rob individuals of their lives and dignity but also inflict immeasurable pain and suffering on their families and communities

The CS reiterated the government’s commitment to end violence and promote a culture of respect, equality and safety not just among women and girls but across all genders.

She noted that her ministry will work with law enforcement agencies to ensure those responsible for these crimes are swiftly brought to justice.

“We call for thorough and comprehensive investigations into these cases and we urge anyone with information to come forward and assist the authorities in their efforts to apprehend and apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators,” Jumwa said.

Her statement comes in the wake of murders of women that have shocked the country.

In the first incident, socialite Starlet Wahu, 26, was on January 6 found murdered in an alleged Airbnb in South B.

Police were on Monday, January 15, called to yet another gory murder scene in Roysambu where the body parts of a woman murdered inside an Airbnb were found stuffed in plastic waste bags and dumped by a dustbin.

The head was missing but the family has since identified the victim.

On Wednesday, the body of a middle-aged woman was found dumped on the roadside in Juja, Kiambu County.

The naked body was found dumped at Gwa-Kairu area in Juja, police said.

Juja sub-county Police Commander Michael Mwaura said they were alerted by locals a naked body was at the scene where it was found.

Commenting on the matter, Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has advised Kenyans to verify the legal status of Airbnb establishments before booking for safety purposes.

Airbnb is an online lodging service. The name means Air Bed and Breakfast.

In a statement on Tuesday, the CS expressed concern about the recent criminal incidences in the short-stay accommodation sector. 

"It is our assurance that hospitality services in Kenya are generally safe. However, we urge the public to verify the registration and license status of facilities to ensure compliance with already outlined directives by the government and maintain quality standards," he said.
