The Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga has approved murder charges against a police officer linked with the killing of two people at a Nakuru club shooting incident last month.

The DPP said there is sufficient evidence to sustain the murder charges, following a comprehensive investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

"Having reviewed the inquiry file, the DPP is satisfied that there is sufficient evidence to sustain a charge of murder," the DPP said.

"The DPP has therefore directed that the suspect be charged with two counts of murder contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code today, January 10, 2024, at Nakuru High Court, Nakuru County."

The suspect was arrested on December 12, 2023, and presented to court two days later on a miscellaneous application.

The suspect was on Tuesday presented before court for a third time and the prosecution led by Wycliffe Omwenga sought a further 14-day extension of his detention at Naivasha Police Station because the matter was being handled by a different agency.

The officer who was attached to Nakuru Central Police Station is accused of killing the owner of the club, Laura Kwisira, and a barmaid Ann Maina after an altercation over the settling of a Sh16,000 bill.

He is said to have allegedly shot two bouncers at the club one of whom is still admitted in hospital.

"The DPP retaliates his endeavour to continue the coordination, cooperation and collaboration with IPOA into the foreseeable future to enhance accountability, efficiency, and expeditiousness in the prosecution of similar cases within the criminal justice system."
