Residents in Voi Town have been marooned by rising waters after Voi River burst its banks on Monday morning.
Kenya Red Cross says it's on-site conducting search and rescue operations for families marooned by rising waters.
Voi River breaking its banks comes barely a month after rivers Ruvu and Njoro broke their banks due to heavy downpours.
This is the third river in Taita Taveta County to break its banks, causing heavy floods that leave hundreds displaced.
As of November 26, over 400 families were displaced after their houses were submerged
The villages most affected are Mwarusa, Mata, Lesuyai, Rekeke, Kitobo, Wanganga, Gregan, and Tangini.
Further, some 211 residents from 99 families sought refuge at the Kimondia market shed awaiting evacuation to safe ground.
Many farms were submerged in water, some of the livestock were swept away while feeder roads were rendered impassable.
“Flood water swept across the area, destroying our crops and property. We have lost all our belongings and we are only waiting for wellwishers to come for the rescue," Asinati Nathaniel said during an interview at Mwarusa village.
According to the Meteorological department, the weather forecast from December 1 to 7, rainfall is expected to continue over the southern part of the country, with a reduction in intensity.
"Isolated storms and heavy rains are expected to occur over a few areas i the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley."
Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura on December 1, 2023, announced that death tool as a result of floods stood at 142
"The escalation of floods has led to the establishment of five additional camps to accommodate the growing number of displaced individuals," he said.
Turkana County has also been added to the list of counties on high alert due to the intensifying floods.
