A police officer was arrested after the body of his wife was found in his house with gunshot wounds in Eldoret town.

Officials said the officer shot and killed the woman and went back to work as usual.

The incident happened on Tuesday, November 28, within Railways police line, police said.

Other police officers at the station said they heard gunshots from the officer’s house and when they went to check they found the body of his wife lying in a pool of blood.

Police said she had been shot twice in the chest.

By then, the husband had gone back to the report office at the station and continued to work.

He had been issued with a scorpion rifle with 30 bullets for escort of trains in the area.

He was disarmed and arrested over the murder, police said.

Police said he had spent three bullets in the shooting.

Police handling the murder said the couple had been having domestic quarrels, which is believed to have led to the incident.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other probes.

This is the latest such incident to happen in the area.

A policewoman shot and killed her husband in the same area in October following a domestic quarrel.

She is facing murder charges.

The incidents are linked to trauma-related attacks by police officers which are on the rise.

Many say this is linked to their stress.

As part of efforts to address the trend, police authorities have launched counselling services and the National Police Service Commission has established a unit and staffed it to attend to their demanding situation.

The counselling unit will, among other things, evaluate, design and lead an outreach programme that helps prevent mental health and substance abuse.

At least three suicide cases involving police officers are recorded every month.

Officials say police are generally on the receiving end of all community problems.

They are expected to maintain law and order in very difficult situations, besides putting their lives at risk.

Over the years, a spike in deaths in the service has been linked to trauma.

They include deaths by gun.
