Eight people drowned on Thursday night as they crossed a flooded River Muuoni in Emali, Makueni county while another two died in Isiolo as El Nino rains continued to claim lives.
The eight who died in Makueni were attempting to cross the swollen river on their way home from a church event in Nairobi.
Kavuthu chief Norman Musyoki and police said they were crossing from Kavuthu to Mutyambua when the tragedy happened.
"They alighted from the bus after the driver grew cold feet and decided not to cross the swollen river. Some of the passengers took shelter at the Kavuthu shopping centre to wait for the waters to subside but the eight victims decided to cross the river," Musyoki said.
Among those killed was 63-year-old Agnes Munyao whose body was retrieved at Ndivuni village, some 70km from the spot where they were swept away.
Two other bodies were also retrieved on Friday with villagers along the river were asked to alert authorities if they spot any bodies.
The victims were part of a larger group returning home after a meeting with First Lady Rachel Ruto in Kasarani, Nairobi.
The Red Cross and the county disaster teams said they had deployed rescue and search personnel to the area.
In Isiolo, two family members died Thursday night following a heavy downpour at Attan village in Ngaremara ward.
Isiolo deputy county commissioner Patrick Musango confirmed the deaths saying that so far three people have lost their lives following floods caused by the ongoing heavy rain in the area.
The administrator said several houses, businesses and the road infrastructure have been destroyed.
He said that the two victims of the floods were attempting to cross a swollen seasonal river that swept them away at Attan village.
The DCC revealed that the two bodies of Francis Lingile, aged 22 and Alice Achiru, 29, were discovered at Ngaremara Bridge following a search by the area residents and the relatives who reported the matter to the local chief and later the police came for the bodies.
The administrator directed chiefs and their assistants to ensure the local people do not risk their lives by moving them and their livestock to raised grounds.
He also advised the residents to avoid crossing flooded areas since the rains being experienced in the region had badly affected most of the waterways.
Musango asked the public health department to readily mobilise area people to clear bushes around their homes and direct stagnant waters away from homesteads to avoid contracting Malaria and waterborne diseases.
“The Public health officials should make the residents understand that they are prone to contracting Malaria and water-related diseases since floods had destroyed toilet facilities, sewerage and drainage systems in Isiolo town thus contaminating the water in their locality,” he said.
He appealed to wananchi to boil water before drinking, use insecticide-treated mosquito nets and keep their environment clean to avoid disease outbreaks and also take the sick to the hospital in time.
The DCC said the government would provide relief food to El-Niño victims adding Ngaremara, Burat, Wabera, Bulapesa and Oldonyiro are the worst affected Wards in Isiolo subcounty.
