Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson through his non-governmental organization "Sakaja Foundation" has come to the rescue of an underprivileged struggling single mother, Gladys Atieno from Kariobangi.
This is after Atieno’s hopeless story was highlighted on social media platforms, depicting a sorry situation for her amid the soaring cost of living.
The mother of three who was on the verge of giving up and 'vanishing' as she faced financial torture, can now smile after Sakaja's led team visited her with bags full of donations.
The goodies delivered to her comprised of house shopping, baby pampers, cooking gas, a high-density mattress, 4 by 6 double-decker bed among others.
A neighbour narrated how Atieno had almost neglected her newborn and wanted to abandon the baby after being unable to make ends meet.
"The infant is just three hours old and was abandoned by the mother to hustle for food. The baby is only wrapped in a filthy cloth," said a neighbour.
Atieno has also been relocated from a shanty structure where she was staying and shifted to a stately rental house following the intervention.
"I delivered on the night of Wednesday, and because I had no money to keep the infant, I was forced to go out to hustle for food and house rent. When I came back from the hustle with only Sh50, I was shocked to see emotional neighbours carrying the infant," said Atieno.
The Sakaja Foundation paid her rent fully for the next two months.
According to the video that went viral on social media, Atieno who had just delivered was forced to abandon the helpless toddler in the shanty structure to hustle for food.
"We rescued the baby and admitted him to Mama Lucy Hospital for medical assistance," said Community Health Promoter, Christine Njeri.
Governor Sakaja’s Foundation is a privately funded entity that is seeking to offer a helping hand to underprivileged families and individuals in society.
