A 28-year-old man died after a pit latrine collapsed as he was taking shelter therein in Kahawa West, Nairobi.

A second man was rescued from the sludge and taken to the hospital in the Tuesday evening incident, police said.

The two had gone to the pit latrine outside their residence when it started to rain and decided to take shelter therein.

According to Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei, the latrine collapsed with the two inside trapping them.

One Peter Ndegwa, 45, was rescued alive while Isaac Nyongesa died and the body was retrieved at about 7 pm, police said.

A multi-agency team comprising police and the Nairobi county disaster management team managed to retrieve the body of the deceased, which had been buried in the sludge.

The incident happened in the Kiwanja area, police said.

Bungei said the latrine may have collapsed out of heavy rains being experienced in the city.

“We urge everyone to be cautious of the rains. We are experiencing some incidents of drowning at homes which can be avoided,” he said.

He added they have mobilized teams to patrol and help those affected by the rains.

The met department has warned the rains will continue to pound parts of the country and asked for relevant authorities to take action to address the effects.

Officials say at least 60 people have been killed and many displaced in rain-related incidents.

Those displaced need food and shelter at various places as the military joins in the supply of relief food.

Meanwhile, police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in his house almost a week after he went missing in Huruma, Nairobi.

The body of Anthony Mutemi was found in his house by a relative who had been trying to reach him through his mobile phone in vain.

According to police, the relative visited the deceased’s house and broke in where he and other neighbours found the body.

The cause of the death is yet to be known.

The body was rotting at the time of its discovery on Tuesday evening.

Police said they moved the body to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.
