US-based Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o has opened up about her breakup with her boyfriend Selema Masekela.

Lupita, 40, made the announcement about the breakup through her official Instagram page on Thursday.

Lupita cited a lack of trust in her 52-year-old boyfriend Masekela.

“At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust. I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love of a suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deceit,” Lupita said.

“I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say.

“Whatever, my life is better this way. But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love,” Lupita added.

The breakup comes barely a year after the two went public about their relationship.

Lupita first announced that she was dating Masekela in December 2022.

She noted she had opted to open up so that her experience could help inspire other people who might silently be undergoing the same.

She further noted that she is ready to face her pains with courage hoping that it shall soon pass noting that people going through tough times should face the pain to avoid spreading it.

And so, I am choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet my life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass,” Lupita said.

She added: “I share this to keep it 100 per cent, and hoping that the knowledge of my experience might be useful to someone else out there experiencing the grip of heartbreak who is poised to try and escape from the pain and miss out on the wisdom that comes from it.”

Masekela is the son of the late South African jazz composer Hugh Masekela.
