Artisanal mining, with its multifaceted dimensions encompassing socioeconomic, environmental, and health and safety aspects, has been a crucial sector in Kenya.

While more extensive mining operations often overshadow the industry, it plays a significant role in the lives of thousands of Kenyan miners who depend on it for their livelihoods.

One of the critical aspects of artisanal mining that deserves immediate attention is health and safety. Artisanal miners often toil in hazardous conditions, working with rudimentary tools and minimal safety measures.

The lack of proper ventilation, protective gear and safety protocols exposes miners to many risks, including respiratory diseases, accidents, and toxic substances. Addressing health and safety concerns in artisanal mining is not just a moral obligation; it's a necessity for safeguarding miners' well-being and the industry's sustainability.

Kenya boasts a thriving gold and gemstone industry, largely thanks to the dedication of artisanal miners. These miners work tirelessly to extract these precious resources from the earth, often facing countless challenges.

However, their contributions to the nation's wealth should not come at the expense of their health and safety. It is incumbent upon the government, mining companies and relevant organisations to invest in proper training, safety equipment and healthcare services for artisanal miners.

As the impacts of climate change continue to affect agriculture and traditional livelihoods across Africa, and Kenya, we can expect a surge in artisanal mining.

Communities struck by changing weather patterns soon turn to informal and easily accessible work like artisanal and small-scale mining. While this presents an economic opportunity, it also poses environmental challenges, as miners may need more awareness or means to adopt sustainable practices.

The government, through the State Department of Mining, should encourage responsible mining practices, including environmentally sustainable approaches. A harmonious balance between economic growth and environmental conservation can be achieved in the artisanal mining sector.

If implemented by the government of the day, the Bottom up economic transformation agenda will align perfectly with the artisanal mining sector. Miners should be empowered by opportunities to harness their skills and resources for financial advantage.

By supporting and formalising this sector, the government can help miners improve their working conditions, increase their productivity, and enhance their income. This, in turn, contributes to poverty reduction and economic growth at the grassroots level.

To ensure the long-term sustainability and safety of artisanal mining, the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs must take steps to formalise and regulate the sector.

This includes implementing policies and regulations that promote responsible mining practices, protect the environment, and ensure the health and safety of miners.

It also involves providing miners with access to training, tools, and technology to enhance their productivity while minimising the negative impacts on the environment.

Artisanal mining in Kenya has the potential to empower communities, drive economic growth and offer a lifeline to those affected by climate change impacts.

However, realising these benefits requires a concerted effort to address health and safety concerns, promote economic empowerment and regulate the sector. By doing so, Kenya can harness the full potential of artisanal mining while safeguarding the well-being of its miners and the environment.
