Brian Mwenda Njagi a young Kenyan accused of impersonating a High Court lawyer was Tuesday grilled at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation in Nairobi for hours before being released.

He was released on a Sh100,000 cash bail on Tuesday night ahead of his arraignment.

Mwenda had spent the better part of the day Tuesday before detectives at the DCI headquarters before he was driven to Muthaiga police station where he was released after negotiations by his lawyers led by John Khaminwa and former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko.

Sonko said they will present Mwenda in court as ordered by the police to face various charges.

“We will be in Milimani court to face the charges. He has been released after intervention ahead of his arraignment,” said Sonko even as he insisted Mwenda is innocent.

Mwenda had presented himself there following summonses by the police who took his statement as part of a probe into claims he impersonated.

Law Society of Kenya president Eric Theuri said he was aware he was at DCI.

“We are going to ensure that he faces the full force of the Law. The evidence gathered so far points to several cases of forgery and identity theft,” he said.

“Further inquiries are ongoing. We are working closely with the DCI team to conduct thorough and extensive investigations. This case will be a deterrent for future masqueraders.”

Many people have been talking about him in the past week.

Kenyans have been sharing their thoughts on social media after it was revealed that Mwenda was disguising himself as a lawyer.

Some videos of Mwenda in court, where he was making legal arguments and representing clients, have appeared online.

One of the most talked-about parts of this story was the claim that Mwenda won all 26 cases he was involved in.

Many people believed this and thought of him as a hero.

However, Theuri has rejected the idea that Mwenda won those 26 cases.

They claim he is a fake lawyer and should be arrested for pretending to be someone he’s not.

Some lawyers are angry with Mwenda for pretending to be a lawyer, but others, including former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko and Cotu secretary general Francis Atwoli, have defended him.

Mwenda’s case has prompted the police to crack down on fake lawyers.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Renson Mulele Ingonga, also called on the police to investigate the matter.
