Sifuna to Khalwale: Fix roads before ushering electric vehicles

According to Sifuna, separate lanes should be created with the exit lanes painted red.

In Summary

• Sifuna said fuel has never been a problem for Kenyans and introduction of electric vehicles is just the transfer of the problem of affordability.

• He said that just as fuel must be bought at the price it is trading at, so do these electric vehicles need to be charged despite rising cost of electricity.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has told Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale to repair and bring in the necessary infrastructure before ushering in the electric vehicles.

According to Sifuna, separate lanes should be created with the exit lanes painted red.

He was speaking in an interview on Thursday.

“First of all Khalwale, sort out the infrastructure before bringing in these electric vehicles. To which roads are you bringing them?” Sifuna asked Khalwale.

Additionally, Sifuna said fuel has never been a problem for Kenyans and the introduction of electric vehicles is just the transfer of the problem of affordability.

Sifuna said that just as fuel must be bought at the price it is trading at, so do these electric vehicles need to be charged despite the rising cost of electricity.

“The problem has never been the fuel that we are using, because even if we transfer the problem and change the cars from fuel to electric, the electricity has gone up,” he said.

Khalwale said the cost of both fuel and electricity should be handled by the Ministry of Energy.

For the first time in history, the prices of fuel rose by as high as Sh20 per litre with the big jump expected to have far-reaching consequences for households.

In the review, the price of petrol is up by almost Sh17 per litre while that of diesel has increased by about Sh21.32 per litre.
