Musalia returns to take charge in Ruto, Rigathi absence

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi jetted back into the country on Thursday night to take charge at the helm of the country's leadership.

The Prime CS had been in the United Kingdom for a 4-day official visit in which he held meetings with government officials.

The Prime CS arrived in the country minutes past 10 pm, taking charge of the country's affairs following the absence of its two topmost leaders.

Mudavadi's tour included official engagements with the United Kingdom bureaucrats, with the primary focus of strengthening the Kenya-UK bilateral partnership.

Accompanying Mudavadi was Attorney General Justin Muturi, and Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar.

President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua had travelled abroad for official duties, leaving National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula temporarily at the helm.

The President left the country on Wednesday night for New York, Gachagua is in Colombia while Mudavadi was in London.

Gachagua, the country's second in command is in Colombia on a mission to market coffee.

He is accompanied by government officials as well as select coffee stakeholders.

While there was no constitutional crisis following their absence from the country at the same time, questions had arisen as to who was in charge.

The Constitution places Wetang'ula third in command in the country's political leadership hierarchy.

In the absence of Ruto and Gachagua, Wetang'ula ranks third in the constitutional and political pecking order.

However, in terms of operations of the executive arm of government, Mudavadi is a key plank of the President's administration.

The President is pushing to have his position anchored in law during the ongoing bipartisan talks.
