National Assembly’s Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works has promised to work on legislation that will ensure the smooth implementation of the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).

Speaking during the inspection tour of National Housing Corporation’s projects in Embu and Kirinyaga Counties, the Committee led by Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno praised the ongoing works in the two counties that were launched in June this year.

The members were impressed by the quality of the works and the speed at which the said projects were being constructed.

Members committed to helping NHC with proper legislation and putting in place the necessary incentives.

The committee was on an inspection tour of the housing and infrastructural projects that fall under it in Embu, Kirinyaga and Murang’a counties which include public markets being undertaken by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development and affordable housing projects that are being implemented by the National Housing Corporation.

The corporation is the principal implementer of the Affordable Housing projects and is working in partnership with counties to deliver the houses.

“So far, we have done various site inspections in Nairobi, Mombasa and several other parts of the country. If you look at the implementation, I can tell you that the projects are moving very fast and I can give them a rating of 80 per cent,” said Hon. Ng’eno.

The MPs further noted that the committee was working to fix the challenges faced by the corporation in the implementation of the affordable housing programme.

“We are working as a committee to remove the challenges and hurdles which NHC is facing. Be it through legislation or giving incentives, we shall do that so that these housing projects run smoothly. We shall ensure NHC has the right incentives. So far we have seen the good work that the corporation has done,” said the Chairman.

The Embu and Kirinyaga Affordable Housing Projects are at 40 and 30 per cent completion, respectively and set to be done by June 2024.
