Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has rallied Mt Kenya to speak in one voice when IEBC embarks on a review of constituency and ward boundaries.

Gachagua said the leadership of Nyeri has already agreed that they will be unanimous in pushing to have the Kieni constituency divided into two.

“Even if Mathira will not be subdivided, I will talk to them. We must give Kieni preference,” he said.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service for Energy PS Alex Wachira at Irigathathi Primary School in Kieni, Gachagua reiterated that the Rift Valley and Mt Kenya should not have divided opinions during the exercise.

“Mt Kenya and Rift Valley are the strongholds of President William Ruto and we do not want noise in the two regions. We must speak in one voice,” he said.

He said leadership in Kericho, Kiambu and Meru counties should stop squabbling. “We cannot accept that. This is your backyard, Your Excellency,” he stated.

According to the Constitution, IEBC is required to demarcate the boundaries every eight to 12 years and not later than 12 years.

The next review of the boundaries of constituencies and wards must be undertaken and concluded by March 2024.

Further, the commission is mandated to review the number, names, and boundaries of wards periodically.

However, the number of constituencies must be maintained at 290 as stated in the constitution. The last delimitation or fixing of the boundary was conducted in 2012.
