Lawyer Miguna Miguna has waded into the ongoing talks on Constitutional amendments.

In a statement on Tuesday morning, Miguna claimed that to amend the constitution which he referred to as “BBI 2” would be a betrayal to the people by President William Ruto.

The lawyer said that Ruto never campaigned promising to bring another (Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) to Kenyans.

“ In 2022, before the general elections, President William Ruto kept asking Kenyans: “Mnataka tubadilishe uchumi au tubadilishe katiba? (Do you want economic or constitutional change) ,” Miguna said.

“Kenyans roared - Uchumi! Uchumi Uchumi (economy). This was one of those popular rallying cries that propelled Ruto to the presidency,” he added.

Miguna highlighted that there are many challenges Kenyans were facing and the BBI2 should not be top of the government’s agenda.

He said that just one year after the 2022 general elections, the economy is still in tatters, saying the shilling is nearly worthless as against the US Dollar and the cost of living in the stratosphere among others.

“We cannot support another wrong headed, politically divisive and costly constitutional change initiative. We say a firm no!” Miguna added.

Kenya Kwanza and Azimio legislators have differed over lawyer Patrick Loch Otieno (PLO) Lumumba's suggestion that the 2010 Constitution is ripe for amendments.

The lawyer had proposed constitutional changes in representation, government structure, devolution, constitutional commissions, and the East African Community (EAC).

Lumumba had lamented that the two-third gender rule had become almost impossible to implement hence the need for review.
