Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago has been arraigned before a Nakuru court over numerous graft-related charges.

Mandago was seen on the dock clad in a red tie waiting for the case to start.

He was accompanied by two other defendants, Joshua Lelei and Meshack Rono.

The three are accused of conspiring to steal Sh1.1 billion from a Kenya Commercial Bank account in Eldoret registered under the Uasin Gishu Education Trust Fund.

This Fund was intended for overseas university fees for scholarship students.

The court had issued a warrant for arrest in relation to the Finland education program.

This was after the trio failed to show up in Nakuru court for plea-taking.

Uasin Gishu has faced unprecedented protests from a section of its residents over the alleged misappropriation of funds intended to provide scholarships to over 200 students.

The tension turned the spotlight on the county as Mandago and his successor Jonathan Bii engaged in a blame game over who should shoulder the cross.

In the charge sheet, the DPP says Mandago along with the co-accused conspired to steal the Sh1.1 billion.

This was the cash meant for the botched overseas university fees.

The President has labelled the fiasco as “deeply embarrassing”.
