The fear of possible El-Nino rains in September has made the Ministry of Health organise a cholera vaccination drive from August, PS Public Health Mary Muthoni has said.

The vaccination drive which is expected to commence on Thursday this week and go on till August 12 targets at least 1.5 million people above the age of one year.

As per the ministry, the counties targeted in the drive include Nairobi, Wajir, Mandera, Machakos, Homa Bay, Marsabit and Garissa.

In Nairobi, the campaign targets Kamukunji and Embakasi Central subcounties while in Wajir it targets the Wajir North subcounty.

In Mandera, the Mandera East subcounty is targeted with the drive expected to take place in Moyale subcounty in Marsabit.

In Homa Bay, the drive will take place in Suba South subcounty, GK Prison and Special school in Machakos and Dadaab refugee camps in Garissa.

“Because of the El-Nino that has been announced that may happen in September you realise that it is going to be very wet and there is going to be probably water that is flowing and it would be important that we get prepared,” the PS said.

According to data from the ministry, the outbreak that started in September last year at a wedding in Kiambu has since seen 11,891 cases and 194 deaths reported across the country.
