Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior has condemned the alleged fatal shootings by police officers during the anti-government demonstrations in Makueni County.
Kilonzo Junior urged Independent Police Oversight Authority IPOA to crack the whip and arrest police officers involved in the shootings.
Peter Ngolany'e and Brian Muendo, 18, residents of Wote and Emali towns respectively, were shot by police.
He issued the ultimatum after Ngolany'e was reportedly shot dead by police officers during the demonstrations at Wote Town, Makueni County on Wednesday.
"On 19th July 2023, the Kenyan police once again shot an innocent bystander, Peter Ngolany'e, a water vendor in Wote Town. The bullet that went through his chest cavity caused him to bleed to death on the streets of Wote Town," Kilonzo Junior said on Thursday.
The County CEO termed the incident as a fatal shooting of unarmed protester Peter Ngolany'e.
"Once again retaliate my position. There's no legal justification for the police to shoot unarmed Kenyans particularly when they are demonstrating peacefully or going about their normal businesses," the legislator added.
He said it was disheartening to note that despite several and similar complaints on the use of live bullets against innocent Kenyans, several Kenyans have been shot dead.
This, he said, has left their families and friends in deep shock and agony.
"These unlawful actions by the Kenya police won't cow Kenyans from exercising their fundamental rights. Instead, it will harden their resolve," he said.
Kilonzo Junior said it pains him as a legal human defender that the Kenya police have resorted to using guns and live ammunition in an attempt to silence and or intimidate peaceful Kenyans.
"I hereby request IPOA to take up this matter urgently and bring to book all or any officer who was responsible for the death of Mr Peter Ngolany'e. Makueni residents are keeping the bullet that killed the 18-year-old Brian Muendo in Emali during last Wednesday's protests and Peter Ngolany'e in Wote Town yesterday," Kilonzo Junior said.
