The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) now wants Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate the conduct of police officers deployed during Wednesday's protests.
KNCHR in a statement on Thursday said the recent events and occurrences are an indication that the country is slowly sliding back to anarchy.
This comes amid concerns that police might have used excessive force when restraining protestors during the Wednesday anti-government demonstrations.
Reports indicate at least seven people were shot dead during the protests called by the opposition.
“KNCRH calls upon the IPOA to review and investigate the conduct of the deployed police officers in quelling the demonstrations,” the commission chairperson Roseline Odede said.
“The loss of lives, injuries, and destruction of properties pose a significant threat to the peace and stability of Kenya,” Odede said.
The Commission has further called on the government through the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to conduct thorough and prompt investigations of the incidents that transpired during the protests.
They further want the government to ensure that those responsible for human rights violations and abuses are held accountable and that justice is served.
The commission has called on leaders across the political spectrum to prioritise the interests of the nation and its citizens over partisan interests.
