President William Ruto has heaped praise on former National Intelligence Service (NIS) boss Major General Philip Kameru as he goes into retirement.

Speaking at State House, Nairobi, Ruto said Kameru served the country with diligence as a chief spy.

The President said the former NIS boss served at a difficult time but remained steadfast and patriotic.

He added that even as goes into retirement, he has the goodwill of the state and Kenyans.

"Let me take this opportunity in a very special way to congratulate Maj General Philip Kameru for the exemplary service he has provided for the Republic of Kenya. I have worked with Philip for a couple of years and I can attest that he has served the country with diligence loyalty and patriotism," Ruto said.

"As you retire to do other assignments both personal and public you have our goodwill. Congratulations for serving the country in a very outstanding manner in a difficult time. In a very complicated geopolitical arena with terrorism and many other things that come. As you take leave, you have our goodwill and prayers."

The head of state noted Kameru is among senior citizens whose experience will be tapped into, to help govern and develop the country.

He said the former NIS boss stayed when he asked that he continues to serve his administration, and he is grateful for his service.

"As I informed you, we will be looking for senior citizens like yourself. People who have served in senior government positions to support the country."
