President William Ruto on Wednesday made yet a passionate appeal to lawmakers to support the housing levy.

Ruto who was speaking during a national prayer breakfast called on the leaders to feel the pain a majority of Kenyans and especially the youth are currently facing.

“If we feel the pain of the three per cent, it is because we are alive. If we feel the pain of the millions of young people looking for jobs, of seven million Kenyans who live in indignity in slums, then we are human beings."

The tax is contained in the Finance Bill, 2023 which has continued to elicit varied reactions from Kenyans and split leaders.

It is set to be tabled in Parliament for debate this week.

Construction of affordable houses under the ambitious plan, according to the head of state, will help create jobs for the Kenyan youth and create a steady cash flow in the economy.

"We have 5 million unemployed youth and they are not illiterate. They have studied and we have a responsibility as a country to give them jobs and that is why I am urging you that let's not deceive each other," Ruto said recently.
