Two people died in a gold mine in Ikolomani on Thursday afternoon.
Rescuers have recovered the hand of one of the two people who died in a gold mine.
The body of one of the miners was retrieved on Thursday evening.
Villagers, police and the Red Cross officials were helping with the search operations.
The incident occurred at Bugondi village in Iguhu location.
Shibeye community area administrator Wilson Yaola said the body of the second miner was under a heavy rock that cut off his hand.
“They were mining when the tragedy struck, killing them on the spot,” he said.
He said that there were 14 miners in the gorge but 12 had gone for lunch when the accident occurred.
The body and hand were taken to the Kakamega County funeral parlour.
Artisanal and Small Scale Miners Association of Kenya (ASSAK) national vice chairman Patrick Ligami said they will require mechanical excavation to retrieve the body.
