Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba on Wednesday said that there is a reason to celebrate Menstruation Hygiene Day.

Menstruation hygiene day is observed on May,28.

Speaking during an interview at Citizen Tv, the senator said that the positive approach that the government and the male counterparts are taking to the situation is convincing.

Orwoba said that counties are asked to support the program.

"The fact that we are on Tv talking about menstruation shows that we have broken the glass ceiling because this is a topic that people would be shy to talk about it in public," Orwoba said.

In a statement, Orwoba said that this shows the support the public has towards menstruation hygiene of the female gender.

The senator said that most girls and women in Africa handle their menstrual flow depending on the availability of resources.

"Lack of freedom and access to pads in women’s prisons makes them share pads," Orwoba said.

"We also have some cultures where women are told to sleep out until their periods are over."

This is not the first time Orwoba is publicly speaking about the need to take menstruation hygiene seriously.

A month ago she was advocating for free sanitary pad distribution through a motion, to girls who can't afford the basic items every menstrual cycle.

Ahadi Reusable Pads Director Bethsheba Otuga who was also part of the discussion said that there is still lack of information and therefore men will tend to shy away from it.

Otuga added that creating awareness would be very important for that matter.

"Everybody should join in to ensure that the women are comfortable and that they can menstruate with dignity," she added.
