President William Ruto left mourners in stitches after he said that Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga is only good at narrating history, and can't beat him in matters of economy.

Speaking during the funeral service of Mama Mukami Kimathi in Nyandarua, Ruto defended his government on the Finance Bill 2023 tabled in Parliament that proposed additional tax.

"Nimepunguza sehemu karibu ishirini kwa mambo ushuru, nimeondoa karibu billion mia tano kwa hio budget, pale kwa historia unaweza kunishinda, lakini kwa mambo uchumi, mimi naweza kabisa," he said.

(I have reduced upto twenty sectors in matter tax, and I have also removed close to Sh500 billion from the proposed 2023/24 budget, on matters history I agree you can defeat me, but not on matters of the economy)

He also said that the previous regime deteriorated the economy and his government is working towards recovering it.

"I am a good student of former President Mwai Kibaki, when he took over the government, the tax was at Sh200 billion, through his brains he pushed the tax to almost Sh1 trillion," he said.

Ruto also commended retired President Uhuru Kenyatta for pushing the economy despite taking too many loans and making taxes increase to Sh2 trillion.

"Kibaki realised that one cannot run a country through debts, but through coming up with tax measures, give me a chance to plan further," he added.

Raila has criticised the government for the high cost of living, and in previous months led his supporters to demos for the Kenya Kwanza government to look for solutions.
