Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has moved two police commanders from Meru to curb cattle rustling along the Meru-Isiolo border.

Kindiki moved the two officers to facilitate investigations and ensure efficiency in security operations in the area.

"The Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) for Igembe North Sub-County and the Officer-in-Charge of the of the General Service Unit (GSU)command in the area have been removed," the CS said.

In a statement, Kindiki said the changes are to be implemented immediately.

He, however, did not specify whether they had been fired or redeployed.

This comes after he held a security Baraza with residents from Igembe North Constituency at Ndoleli Chief’s Camp, getting recommendations from them on the security of the area.

To heighten security in the area, Kindiki said two more police posts will be established along the Meru-Isiolo border.

This is after he got a request from residents to procure a police vehicle and upgrade of one of the police posts to a police station.

He said the government is currently processing their request.

The CS said the ministry has upscaled intelligence-led security surveillance in the area.

"To this end, the county and subcounty Security and Intelligence teams have intensified their surveillance to ensure there will be no recurrence of cattle rustling activities in the area," he said.

Additionally, the CS said logistics for establishing an Anti-Stock Theft Police Unit (ASTU) facility at Loloro are now complete.

He said the camp will be operational from Wednesday, May 10, 2023.

Kindiki also gave an update on the investigations of the brutal killing of the immediate former area MCA George Kaliunga.

He said the police have made progress.

"The security and intelligence teams are closing in on some suspects who once arrested will be arraigned in court to face charges of murder and other related offences," Kindiki said.
