The Independent Policing Oversight Authority has launched investigations into the shooting in the Jua Kali area in Kisumu on Tuesday.

The incident left a Form Two girl dead and three others hospitalised with injuries after they were allegedly hit by stray bullets.

Ipoa chairperson Anne Makori in a statement on Wednesday said a Rapid Response Team from their Kisumu office had been dispatched to launch investigations into the death.

The team was dispatched on the same day.

“Towards advancing the investigations, the team has so far recorded witness accounts from both the police and members of the public,” Makori said.

“Upon conclusion of its investigations, the Authority shall take appropriate action including recommending to the Director of Public Prosecutions the prosecution of any person found culpable.”

She said the investigations will be impartial, fair, and transparent.

Jecinter Achieng, a 19-year-old student at Rang'ala Girls in Siaya, was on a boda boda to do her shopping before reopening when she was shot.

She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Aga Khan Hospital.

The boda boda rider sustained serious injuries and was hospitalised. Two other people also sustained bullet wounds and were taken to Kisumu County Referral Hospital.

On Tuesday, political leaders in Kisumu condemned the shootings and called for the immediate arrest of police officers involved.
