Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has assured three photographers who were arrested over the weekend in the Central Business District that they will be released.

The governor through his Twitter handle on Sunday thanked those who raised concern over the incident and gave assurance that the photographers will be released.

"I’ve asked for their release. They will be released. Thanks for raising this," the governor said.

Names of photographers arrested on Sunday were given as Duncan Mukinde, Karanja Wangui and Phaustine Okello.

They were taken to Central Police Station where they are still being held.

They told police Sakaja had allowed content creators to operate without permits in the CBD but police could hear none of that.

"Photographers and filmmakers are allowed to film with ease and not harassed. County officers get it. We’re working with the Police to be similarly aligned on it," Sakaja said.

The governor had earlier said that freelance photographers and filmmakers operating within Nairobi County are now exempted from paying for business permits.

Following Sakaja's assurance, Wangui said via his Twitter handle that they had been set free without paying a cent.

"We have been released without a penny. Young people must practice their talents without fear or intimidation," he said.

Sakaja assured that content creators will not be harassed.
