State must regulate religious institutions - Makau Mutua

Azimio spokesperson Makau Mutua has called on the government to regulate religious institutions. 

Makau, in a Tweet on Monday, said the state ought to create regulations for their are people who prey on society in the name of religion. 

"The state must regulate religious institutions and those who prey on society in the name of religion including so-called “prosperity” evangelists and other extremist monsters," he said. 

Makau was speaking about an ongoing case where 50 bodies were exhumed from a mass grave in Shakahola, Kilifi.

The bodies are suspected to have been followers of controversial Malindi pastor Paul Mackenzie. 

It is suspected that Mackenzie misled his congregants into fasting into their deaths in hopes they will meet Jesus. 

Makau described Mackenzie as a disturbing killing machine adding that such acts are not isolated. 

Makau said often, gross abuses are committed all in the name of God and religion. 

"Pastor Mackenzie’s macabre killing machine in the name of Jesus isn’t completely isolated. All too often gross abuses, including murder, are committed in the name of God," he said.

Homicide detectives are still investigating the matter as the exhumation process is still ongoing while Mackenzie is still in police custody.
