Religious leaders have called for a partnership with the government to tame rogue pastors.

This comes after a Malindi preacher Paul Mackenzie Nthenge was accused of misleading followers to fast to death.

Eleven of his followers were rescued last week.

Kilifi political, religious leaders and senior government officials also condemned the controversial preacher’s teachings, with some wanting him sentenced to life.

They say many lives have been lost due to his misleading teachings.

Mackenzie was detained for 14 days to allow police to conduct further investigations.

Speaking to the Star on phone, Bishop Kepha Omae from the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK) said churches are operating under the Societies Act and the State should work with bodies including NCCK to ensure that such preachers are held accountable.

"Every church has got a constitution and objectives, are they being practised or not. The government can use the existing umbrella bodies like EAK and NCCK to ensure that some of these rogue pastors are brought to book or held to account," Bishop Omae said.

For worshippers to avoid being brainwashed, Bishop Omae urged them to investigate some of these preachers and their churches to confirm their authenticity before starting to follow them.

He cautioned Kenyans against joining some of these churches for the sake of joining.

"There are indicators that show signs of preachers and churches that are not genuine. For example, if you find preachers who give teachings that are centred on themselves and not Christ, that’s a red alert," he said.

"Also, if you find preachers who are trying to manipulate you so that you can give money to benefit them, run away."
