13 people have died after a bus carrying a group of mourners rolled at the Josa area along the Wundanyi-Mwatate road in Taita Taveta County.
The mourners were travelling to Mombasa after attending a funeral in Mghambonyi.
The vehicle had 34 adult passengers and an unknown number of children, police have confirmed.
Mwatate sub-county police commander Morris Okul said the bus' brakes failed and as a result fell into a slope, causing the death of the passengers.
From the incident, several other passengers were injured, and they were taken to different hospitals in Mwatate and Voi for treatment.
Bodies of the 13 passengers were taken to Moi County Referral Hospital morgue in Voi.
The exact number of people who were being transported by the bus is yet to be by the time of going to the press.
Okul said police have begun investigations into the accident.
The officers urged drivers who are not familiar with the route to be more careful and desist from overspeeding.
An eye witness Walter Mwadime said 10 people died on the spot in the 8pm grisly accident.
“People volunteered to work tirelessly until 1:00 am when we pulled out the last victim from the mangled wreck turned upside down trapping people under it,” Mwadime said.
Besides the rescue operation, he said people had a difficult time controlling a group of young men who wanted to rob the victims of the accident.
The Josa area is considered a black spot and has claimed many lives of people travelling along the meandering road.
In November last year, a school bus ferrying mourners from Mombasa rolled in the area killing several people.
The bus was reportedly carrying teachers from a Mombasa-based school who had gone to attend the burial of their colleague.
