The burial of William Mayenga, the third-year Maseno University student, who was allegedly shot by police during the nationwide Azimio protests is underway.
Mayenga died on March 20, 2023, when protests rocked the Lakeside City.
Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o and his counterpart from Kisii, Simba Arati, ODM National Treasurer Timothy Bosire and Kisumu County Assembly Chief Whip Seth Ochieng are in attendance at the burial taking place in Nyamira County.
According to a police report, during the protests, they invaded the Sairam supermarket, in Maseno town and other business premises along Kisumu-Busia Road.
Police said the students started pelting stones at the police line, adding that the protestors overpowered them after they ran out of teargas canisters and blanks.
The report stated that six police officers were injured during the skirmishes.
After the shooting, Mayenga was rushed to Coptic Hospital where was pronounced dead on arrival
An autopsy that was conducted revealed that Mayenga died out of a bullet injury after being shot around the neck.
Born on May 2002, Mayenga was the firstborn in his family.
The mother of the deceased Everline Miruka had earlier told the media that she got a call telling her that the son was admitted in the hospital.
She said she only learnt of the truth after getting to the hospital.
"I received the news shockingly. I was told that my child was at the hospital, and they lied that he wasn't dead. When I got to the hospital, they told me my child was long dead".
Lamenting her son's death, the mother wondered how the people mandated with protecting her son ended up shooting him.
"What did my son do to warrant being killed like a bandit?" she asked.
