Nairobi ranked highest in police killings in 2022 – report

In cases of enforced disappearance, Nairobi leads with 11 cases.

Nairobi county has been ranked as having the highest number of police killings in 2022.

The latest report by Missing Voices shows that Nairobi recorded 53 cases of police killings with most of them being as a result of anticrime operations that police conducted in various parts of the county.

 

The report lists Lamu as the second county after 15 cases of police killings were recorded in 2022.

According to the report, all 15 killings in Lamu happened on January 17, 2022, during a multi-agency task force's anti-terror operation in Boni forest.

“All the victims' details were never released but were recorded in the morgue as unknown,” the report reads.

Kiambu had 12 cases, Nakuru 12, Kajiado and Turkana had seven cases each, Mandera and Mombasa four cases each, Siaya three, Embu two while Garissa, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisii, Laikipia, Malindi, Meru, Migori, Taita Taveta and Kilifi had one case each as per the report.

“In cases of enforced disappearance, Nairobi leads with 11 cases, followed by Kiambu with five cases,” the report says.

Nakuru and Kajiado had two cases each of enforced disappearances while Kilifi and Mombasa had one case each.

Overall, Missing Voices documented 152 cases of police killings and enforced disappearances in 2022.

130 cases were police killings and 22 cases of enforced disappearances.

Missing Voices is a coalition of 15 Civil Society Organizations that aim to end extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances in Kenya and call for justice for the families of the victims.
