PSC seeks to fill vacant VC posts in public universities

The Public Service Commission is seeking to recruit vice chancellors, chancellors and deputy vice chancellors to 10 universities.

Institutions that will get new vice chancellors are Pwani University, Kisii University, Karatina University, University of Eldoret and Machakos University.

"Others are South Eastern Kenya University, Technical University of Kenya, University of Kabianga and Alupe University," reads a notice in the local dailies.

At SEKU, PSC will replace Geoffrey Muluvi who has been serving as the vice chancellor's committee chairperson.

Muluvi presided over what was to be his final graduation ceremony in 2022.

John Akama who has been serving as the VC at Kisii University for two terms will also be replaced.

PSC will also replace Francis Aduol of TUK, Mucai Muchiri of Karatina, Lucy Irungu of Machakos University, and Mohammed Rajab of Pwani University.

In 2018, then Education CS Amina Mohamed re-appointed Kisii University  Akama and Teresa Akenga of the University of Eldoret for the second term.

Also getting a second term were TUK VC Aduol, Wilson Kipngeno of the University of Kabianga and Mary Walingo of Maasai Mara University.

Interested applicants were asked to submit their applications by March 20.

The chancellor of Eldoret University is set to exit in the next three months following the expiry of his second term in office, the same being the situation at Meru University.

According to the University Act, 2012, chancellors are mandated to confer degrees and grant diplomas, certificates and other awards at a university.

“The chancellor shall be the titular head of the university and shall in the name of the university confer degrees and grant diplomas,” the law reads in part.

In their absence, the chairman of the university council can only hold forte for three months.

“The functions of the chancellor may in the absence or incapacity of the chancellor be performed by the chairperson of the council for a period not exceeding three months,” the law states.
