The Judiciary is in the process of establishing a Magistrates Court in Yala town, Gem, to comply with the law that requires a court facility closer to the people.
The Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi on Thursday inspected a building that has been availed by the Siaya county government and found it suitable.
“We are here in Yala to receive a structure which has been delivered by the county government of Siaya. We have accepted the building and are happy with it,” Amadi said.
"The building will only need slight adjustments so that all the facilities that are required for a court set-up are properly in place."
Amadi also said the judiciary will send a magistrate and other officers to dispense justice in Yala.
"Having the court in Siaya enables the judiciary to realize its vision of social transformation through access to justice," she said.
"The law requires that we have a court station, a magistrate’s court, in every subcounty.”
Amadi thanked the Yala MCA William Kinyanyi for the spirited effort he put into pressuring the judiciary to set up a court station in Gem.
Speaking during the inspection exercise, Siaya Governor James Orengo hailed the judiciary for the move, saying that it negates the maxim of ‘justice delayed is justice denied’.
Orengo said that the court now takes the legal services closer to the people and those in pursuit of justice will, moving forward, not travel long distances.
“The people of Gem will travel to attend court proceedings in Siaya (town), Maseno or Ukwala. We thank Amadi for accepting to establish a magistrate’s court here in Yala,” he said.
Orengo said Amadi has done the people of Gem a great honour since the subcounty has never had a court station.
