A Kiambu man who was accused of killing his aunt and burying his naked body on a farm has been sentenced to 35 years in jail.

Paul Kamau Mburu, 22, was convicted after the prosecution proved its case that he killed Teresiah Njeri Wanjiku who was his aunt.

On February 9, Kimabu judge Mary Kasango ruled that even though Mburu was remorseful, the statement was not supported by any acknowledgement of the commission of the offence.

Further, the court noted that the accused had lied that he had two children who depend on him.

"The fact that the accused lied in mitigation in respect of children, which he does not have, reveals he is of a character that cannot be trusted. It leads me to conclude that he is not remorseful of the offence," the judge said.

"In the end and given the foregoing, I hereby sentence the accused for the murder of Teresia Njeri Wanjiku to 35 years in prison," she ruled.

The court heard, on April 30, 2016, the accused went to the deceased’s home and offered her some casual work. This was not the first time Paul had asked the deceased to accompany him for a casual job.

After two days, the deceased’s body was found at a farm where Mburu had been working. The husband first noticed the deceased’s gumboot and her underwear at that farm.

After reporting the incident, police launched investigations and found the deceased’s body covered with tree branches to conceal it.

The post-mortem report showed that the deceased was 35 years old at the time of her death. The cause of death was due to asphyxiation.

In mitigation, Mburu stated that he was remorseful and asked for forgiveness.

He sought that he be granted a non-custodial sentence for being a first offender.
