Police hunt gang in fatal shooting of businessman in Thika

A businessman was shot and killed in a bizarre attack at an estate in Thika, Kiambu county. 

James Mwangi, 37, was on Thursday, February 2, evening shot dead by unknown assailants outside his home in Kimathi Estate, police said. 

Thika police commander Daniel Kinyua said the deceased was attacked by a gang of two armed men who approached him as he was alighting from his car and opened fire.

Mwangi, 47, who is a motor vehicle dealer in Thika town, was shot twice at close range in the chest and on the leg before the assailants fled on a waiting motorcycle during the 7:30 pm incident. 

The businessman was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He was alone in the car at the time of the attack. It is believed he was trailed for long before the attack.

Police said they are not sure whether anything was stolen from him. 

His wife told police the deceased had earlier on called her and asked her to wait for him outside their house located at the said estate to pick up some textbooks.

Moments later he arrived and was shot at close range.

His wife was in the house at the time of the indictment. The motive of the incident is yet to be known. 

Police said they are pursuing good leads over the incident.

Officers who visited the scene said they recovered two spent cartridges which are under analysis to tell if the weapon has been used elsewhere.

Meanwhile, police are investigating an incident in which a man was found dead in a suspected murder in the Langata area, Nairobi.

The body of Amos Akaalo, 58, was found in his house with blood oozing from his mouth.

Neighbours told police they had heard a commotion from the house following an argument between the deceased and one of his sons.

Ironically, the son is the one who went to report to the police he had not seen his father for two days.

He was later arrested for interrogation pending possible arraignment.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy.
