The National Cohesion and Integration Commission has blamed Azimio leader Raila Odinga for the rising political tension.

They also called on Azimio leader Raila Odinga to stop his planned political rallies forthwith.

The Commission also warned anyone taking advantage of the public rallies to spread hate speech, saying they will be dealt with at an individual level.

"We cannot afford to slide back. Everyone will be held responsible for their utterances, they cannot hide behind those rallies," NCIC chairperson Samuel Kobia said.

According to Kobia, the rallies as well as demonstrations risk not only polarising the country but also bringing it down to its knees.

"The international community is keen on what is happening in Kenya. Our relationship with the international community is sensitive to things that destabilise peace and cohesion in the country," he said

"The rallies that were held recently saw a spike in hate speech and misinformation, a move likely to get out of hand if unchecked. In January alone, there were 10 hate speech cases and 20 misinformation cases had been recorded and are being investigated."

Kobia also commended Kenyans over what he termed as the most peaceful election, unlike the previous elections.

This, he said, was even affirmed by the observer missions in their reports.

NCIC was addressing the press on the state of peace and cohesion in the country after the 2022 general election.

Kobia said they are working with the ODPP and Judiciary to ensure all pending cases are fast-tracked.

He also said the commission is set to review its laws to strengthen its operations.
