Wetang'ula calls for inclusion of social funds in Constitution

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula has urged legislators to ensure that NG-CDF, Hustler fund and NGAAF are embedded in the 2010 Constitution. 

Wetang'ula spoke on Wednesday after the Post-Election Seminar 2023 organized by the National Assembly in conjunction with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in Mombasa. 

The seminar was presided over by President William Ruto.

Wetangula said that the legislature is mandated to a critical role of ensuring that public resources are put to good use. 

He said this will ensure that the electorate gets services for the resources as allocated.

"I urge members to engage in meaningful deliberations leading to embedding the funds in the Constitution to regularise their availability for socio-economic development," Wetang'ula said. 

He said that Parliament has a core duty of protecting and ensuring that laws are legislated, deliberated and passed for the public good.

To avert constant and future court battles between the National Assembly and the Senate, the speaker said he has initiated a process through a team of senior lawyers who are MPs and are willing to give free counsel for the institutions to avert disagreements.

He said the post-election engagement is a critical event that seeks to enable new members to learn about the operations of Parliament.

Additionally that it also strives to ensure old members enhance their skills that are geared towards the effective delivery of their mandate of legislation, oversight and representation.
