East African Community CS Rebecca Miano flagged off relief food donated by the Kenya Prisons on Monday.
Miano noted that with the dismal short rains, Kenya is not out of the woods yet.
"With gratitude, I received and flagged off relief food donated by Kenya Prisons through State Department for Correctional Services this morning. The food will be distributed to families in Mutha ward, Kitui South subcounty," Miano said.
Miano said that Kitui is among nine counties in the Alarm drought phase.
Kitui South, Kitui East, Mwingi Central and Mwingi North subcounties have been listed as the most affected.
"To ensure the recipient families have a balanced meal, my ministry will add 150 bags of beans to the 400 bags of maize donated today by Prisons from their farms in high potential areas in Rift Valley and Western regions," Miano said.
Miano urged for continued joint efforts by multiple sectors.
She said this will boost the government's efforts to ease the burden of hundreds of thousands of Kenyans vulnerable to the threat of starvation.
"I urge more individuals to emulate Kenya Prisons in this quest," Miano said.
