A woman in Narok has pleaded guilty to subjecting her two daughters to Female Genital Mutilation.

The 30-year-old said she aided in the cutting of her two daughters aged 11 and 13 years old.

The woman said she helped commit the crime at their home in Narok South on November 30, 2022.

Appearing before Narok Senior Resident Magistrate Phyllis Shinyada, she confessed to having committed the act when the schools were closed.

Narok county children’s officer Pilot Khaemba testified against the woman before the court.

“The two children had been taken to a health centre where they were confirmed to have undergone the cut,” he said.

The two girls will remain in custody for two weeks as their mother awaits the court’s verdict.

The United Nations Population Fund’s Annual report on Female Genital Mutilation shows that Kenya is on the right path toward ending the cultural practice.

The report said 51,375 girls have so far been saved from FGM.

“Since 2018, there have been 303 arrests of FGM perpetrators, 300 cases brought to court and 55 convictions and sanctions made,” it read.
