Azimio leader Raila Odinga has warned leaders against bringing political issues to the altar.

Raila said the church should not be turned into a political platform.

He spoke on Sunday at the AIC Cathedral in Mombasa.

"We come to church to pray and fellowship with fellow Christians," he said.

Raila said if leaders want to talk political issues, they should meet in a field elsewhere.

"Tukitaka kuongea siasa, tuongee huko nje kwa kiwanja. Wale wenzetu siku hizi wamefanya kanisa kama kiwanja ya siasa. Baada ya ibada wanakuja wanaanza kutusomea, sisi tumefanya hii, tumefanya hii , tunatataka hii, hapana," he said.

This loosely translates to," If we want to talk politics, lets do it out there on the field. Our colleagues have turned the church into a political field. After fellowship, they lecture us on what we have done and what we want, that is unacceptable."

Raila said the the church ought to remain sacred.

"Wacheni kiwanja ya kanisa ibaki kanisa," he said.

This loosely translates to," Let the confines of the church remain a church."

The ODM leader said they will respond to political rhetoric in rallies.

"Ukitaka sisi wanasiasa tukutane kwa kiwanja huko nje, huko tutasema na tutajibu," he said.

Raila said he is an Anglican and "that is why I always join you people when I am stressed."

He said he is happy to congregate with fellow Kenyans as the year begins.
