Former  Knut secretary general Wilson Sossion has alleged that the consumption subsidy was a way of fleecing money from the citizens.

Speaking on Tuesday during an interview at K24, Sossion added that subsidising consumption without subsidising production does not make economic sense.

"Subsiding consumption was a root and a window of corruption," Sossion said.

He said that even though maize was subsidized to Sh8 billion before the elections, the price of flour never dropped from Sh220.

"So where did the money go to?" Sossion posed.

He also said that fuel had been subsidised continuously yet the price of fuel has never stabilised.

Sossion said that subsidising consumption without subsidising production will create a food shortage.

He said Kenya as an Agricultural country has the potential to produce enough for itself and have a surplus for export.

"We can produce enough and export the surplus," Sossion said.

He said that corruption has messed up the strategic production and support of farmers.

Sossion said that the Kenya Kwanza government had come up with a clear approach to dealing with the rising cost of living in the country.

The new regime took away the subsidies on consumption upon President William Ruto's ascent to power.

Ruto removed the subsidies on maize as well as on fuel.
