Director behind Westlands demolition denies robbery charges

The director of a company involved in the demolition of a house in Westlands has been charged in court.

Nathaniel Barmasai appeared before Milimani chief magistrate Wendy Micheni and denied charges of robbery with violence.

According to the charge sheet, Barmasai on November 4, violently robbed Niraj Shah and Avani Shah of goods worth Sh18 million.

The two are owners of the house in Westlands and Barmasai is the director of Lariak properties.

“Barmasai on November 4 robbed electronic appliances, jewellery and assorted household goods,” the charge sheet read.

The police told the court that the accused threatened to use violence before robbing the Asian family.

Barmasai denied the charges and was granted a cash bail of Sh2 million and a bond of Sh3 million.

Five witnesses have been listed in the case.

Last week, an auctioneer was arraigned in court over the violent evictions.

The police wanted Zacharg Baraza of Siuma Auctioneers detained for 14 days pending further investigation but the request was declined by the court.

The complainant Niraj Shah had told the police that Baraza led 25 people to their family home and destroyed establishments in the said area.

The DCI last week said they have since established that buildings on the parcel of land were extensively vandalised and losses incurred amounted to Sh70 million.
