Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has said if Kenyans want Cabinet Secretaries to be degree holders, then it ought to be constitutionalized.
Speaking on Tuesday in an interview on a local media station, Khalwale said the Constitution does not require CSs to have degrees.
"If you people want Cabinet secretaries to have degrees then have it in the constitution. We don't have a shortage of Kenyans who have degrees," he said.
He further said that education is not a reason enough to bar someone from being a CS.
He highlighted the case of CS nominee Aisha Jumwa whose papers were a subject of discussion at the Parliament during her vetting.
The former Malindi MP was put to task over glaring inconsistencies in her academic papers after it emerged that she obtained a Masters Degree before earning her Bachelors qualification.
Ruto nominated Jumwa to the Public Service, Gender and Affirmative Action docket as a Cabinet Secretary.
"The President had a reason why he thought this honorable member should be a minister," Khalwale said.
He noted that the CS's responsibility would be to give guidance on policy. But the technical issues such as administrative and accounting lie with the Permanent secretary.
The vetting committee is to table their report on the vetting process on Tuesday after the vetting was concluded on Saturday.
Parliament will thereafter debate on the report on Wednesday.
