Long-serving MP Naomi Shaban concedes defeat

She has served as Taveta constituency MP for 20 years.

Long-serving Taveta legislator Naomi Shaban on Tuesday evening conceded defeat in the race to secure a fifth term.

Naomi, in a Whatsapp group, told her supporters that preliminary results had indicated that she will not clinch back the seat.

Naomi who joined politics in 2002 is one of the Coast region's longest-serving legislators. She has served as an MP for 20 years after unseating former MP Basil Criticos.

She congratulated her competitor Bwire Okano of Wiper party.

"Good people, there is time for everything. Well done team Bwire," the Jubilee Deputy Party Leader said.

The veteran politicians said the time has come to move to other things. She lauded her supporters for electing her for four terms.

"Thank you for giving me a chance to serve you for 20 years. My young brother Okano, I congratulate you," she wrote.

Another aspirant Moris Mutiso of ODM also conceded defeat, promising his supporters to mount a bigger fight next time.

Mutiso who narrowly lost the seat to Shaban in the 2017 election said all indications were clear that he had lost.

"We have lost this election, I conceded with my head held high. We live to fight some other day. Let's get back to work now," Mutiso said.

The seat drew stiff competition from five candidates; Shaban, Mutiso, Okano, Gaudenzio Muutu (Independent) and former youth president Didas Mzirai.

Although official results have not yet been announced, preliminary results seen by the Star from a section of poling station showed that Okano is leading in the race.

For instance, at Danida Social Hall, Okano generated 123 votes while Shaban got 94 votes. Mutiso, Gaudenzio and Mzirai got 7, 2 and 3 votes respectively.

In Kitoghoto Nursery School, Okano got 230 against Shaban's 50 votes. Mutiso got 15 votes while Gaudenzio got only one vote.

There are 41,031 registered voters in the constituency, all spread across 89 polling stations according to IEBC.
